Flavors of Island Music

As part of its commitment to continue the legacy of Hawai'i’s music, Starwood Hotels & Resorts offers “Flavors of Island Music,” a campaign that celebrates and perpetuates the diverse styles of island entertainment.

The Royal Hawaiian is proud to participate in Flavors of Island Music by featuring entertainment by some of the island's most talented artists.

Ledward Ka`apana

Made famous by his smooth slack key and signature falsetto vocals, Ka`apana’s music has been embraced by locals and visitors alike since his professional breakthrough with the group Hui `Ohana.  Since then, Ka`apana’s musical talents have set his name among Hawaiian greats. He was a recipient of the second Grammy Award for “Best Hawaiian Music Album” for his performance on Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Volume 1, and Ka`apana went on to win his fourth Na Hoku Hanohano Award for “Best Instrumental Album” of 2006.

Sean Na`auao

Sean Na`auao continues to set benchmarks for today’s contemporary Hawaiian musicians with his sweet voice and island-inspired rhythms.   A talented singer, musician, composer and producer, Na`auao has established a steadily rising solo career garnering five prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano awards including “Island Contemporary Album of the Year” for “Fish & Poi” and “Song of the Year” for “Ka Pilina” from his “Neutralize It” album.

Kelly Boy Delima and `Pena Boy Delima

Widely known as a founding father of island music, Kelly Boy Delima has undoubtedly earned a reputation as one of the best ukulele players to come out of Hawaii.  In addition to releasing 17 albums with his band “Kapena,” Delima has also performed throughout the United States and the South Pacific.  His solo album, “Jus' Kelly Boy,” which features remakes of golden oldies as well as original compositions, was nominated in 1999 for the distinguished Na Hoku Hanohano award in the "Island Contemporary Album of the Year” category.  His son, Kapena (a.k.a. ‘Pena Boy Delima) plays the keyboard and bass for “Kapena.”

Mark Yim

A talented guitarist and vocalist, Mark Yim continues to have an active presence in the Waikiki entertainment scene.  Over the past 21 years, he has worked with big name Hawaiian artists such as the Peter Moon Band, Olomana, Makaha Sons, Herb Ohta, Jr., and Robi Kahakalau.  Yim and his counterpart Alden Levi remain true to their Hawaiian heritage by incorporating traditional sounds with a contemporary pop flavor that appeals to mainstream audiences.

Sam Kapu III

Born into a forth generation of Hawaiian musicians, it is no surprise that Sam Kapu III has successfully continued the musical legacy of his family.  Kapu, who began singing and playing the ukulele at age seven, is known for his upbeat, contemporary Hawaiian tunes.  His first album “Sam Kapu III,” released on Bluewater Records, gained notoriety when it was nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 1994.  Kapu’s latest CD “Lineage,” which pays homage to his very talented family, was nominated for “Best Hawaiian Album of the Year” at the 2003 Hawaii music awards.

Zanuck Lindsey

Zanuck Lindsey has made a name for himself locally, nationally and worldwide.  Lindsey has performed throughout the United States, from the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to Carnegie Hall in New York.  He has also performed in Japan, Hong Kong, Europe, Russia, and Mexico.  A talented guitarist, vocalist, and composer, Lindsey was the winner of the Na Hoku Hanohano award for “Best Jazz Album” in 2000 for his “Hula Joe & the Hutumpers.”  His solo album, “For Every Heart” was nominated for “Best Contemporary Album” in 1999, reaching the status of “Aluminum” that same year.

Doug Fitch

With a musical influence of Raymond Kane, guitarist Doug Fitch has been entertaining guests for more than 30 years.

3 Scoops of Aloha

3 Scoops of Aloha, consisting of guitarist Mel Amina and bassist Analu Aina, was formed in 1982. Their musical influence is Gay Pahinui, and their name means “more than enough aloha.”
